Angel Calero threw five outstanding innings of shutout relief in Kingsport’s 6-3 win over Bluefield. He gave up just three hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Kingsport truly had a team effort in this one. All six runs were scored by different players and five different hitters drove in runs. Jeremy Hambrice was the only Met to go yard and he finished two for four with the solo homerun.
Since Kingsport’s home opener was rained out, their first day of games turned into a doubleheader and unfortunately, they lost both. In the first game, Elizabethton destroyed Kingsport 15-1. Elvin Ramirez was shelled for seven runs in three innings and Richard Pena went two for three.
Game two was closer but a loss is a loss. Angel Calero was hit hard for six runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. The big story was Marcos Tabata. He got ten batters out and nine of those were by strikeouts. He ended up giving up one hit and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Daniel Stegall tripled, drew two walks and drove in three in the game.
